The Paper Street Theatre Improv Festival is back!
This year’s festival will feature special guests Caity Curtis and Stephen Sim from Winnipeg's The Improv Company, alongside Dave Morris, the artistic director of Paper Street Theatre. Plus, a powerhouse ensemble of improvisers from across North America (including some former guest directors)! Each night, audiences will enjoy ensemble shows directed by our guest artists, as well as feature sets by these accomplished improvisers. It will be an exciting week of improv that feels like theatre.
The Festival Ensemble will be: Shannon Bass (Seattle), Tony Beeman (Seattle), Claire Biddiscombe (Ottawa), Brooke Cameron (Victoria), Lauren Coulter (Victoria), Douglas Galbraith (Portland), Jenna Goldade (Red Deer), Byron Kjeldsen (Victoria), Sara McMahon (Seattle), Rosemary Morrison (Vancouver), David Ramage (Calgary), and Zach Wolfman (Vancouver). Featuring guest technical director Jane Hilder (Winnipeg).
Snap! Theatre is a new improv company with commitment at its heart. They aim to combine storytelling and theatre to discover meaningful authentic moments with their audience. It may be funny, but it will always be real. After all, theatre is always at the end of your fingertips.
Ants: Paper Street Theatre cast members, Byron Kjeldsen and Nicole Olszewski are Ants. A kafkaesque absurd storytelling show that follows two characters through the mundanity of life.
Speakeasy: The improvised poetry duo of Dave Morris and Missie Peters. Together they have performed their unique blend of theatre and poetry around the world including festivals in London, Amsterdam, Romania, Würzberg, and Berlin. Speakeasy is an improv show that will bring you moments of joy right before it breaks your heart.
The Festival Ensemble: Each night our international festival ensemble will perform a piece created that day under the direction of one of our visiting directors!
Feature Performances: The second half of each show will feature a format created and directed by one of our Festival Directors: Caity Curtis, Stephen Sim, and Dave Morris. Featuring performances by some special guests, including Tony Beeman, Missie Peters, and more!

Late Night Shows: On the weekend stay late to get a taste of Paper Street's famous mash-ups! On Friday and Saturday night at 10pm the festival ensemble will mix and mash some of Paper Street's most beloved styles. Buckle up for Tarantino Austen (Friday) and Rockets and Ravens (Saturday).

Dave Morris is a speaker, teacher, and storyteller, but mostly he's an improviser. He's been teaching, producing and performing improvisation around Canada and the world for over 25 years. He is the artistic director of Paper Street Theatre and has performed and taught at festivals around the world, including Seattle, Chicago, London, Berlin, Romania, Amsterdam, and many more across Canada. If you haven't seen him before, just know: he likes you already!
Caity Curtis is an improviser, improv trainer and producer. She is the Regional Director of the Canadian Improv Games in Manitoba, teaches improv at MTYP and at Prairie Theatre Exchange. She is also co-founder of “The Improv Company” a training company using applied improvisation. There is a strong chance Caity has already made you laugh at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Winnipeg iF… Improv Festival, or the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
Stephen Sim is an internationally renowned improv performer and teacher. He has 30+ years of experience in improvisation. Stephen is the founder and Artistic Director of the Winnipeg Improv Festival. He is also the co-founder and co-Director of The Improv Company, an improv school based in Winnipeg. Stephen Sim is grateful for the opportunity to create improv shows at international festivals with such talented ensembles and directors.
Jane daylights as a Landscape Designer but at night she is engaged in a variety of artistic endeavours, experimenting with model-making, painting, writing, cosplay, and dance. Jane has worked as a Stage Manager, production assistant, lighting designer, and actor. Currently she Stage Manages and Techs with Club Soda Improv, and The Improv Company.
Great improv shows often come from strong formats. This workshop focuses on creating your own improv structures by exploring different techniques, frameworks, and theatrical devices you can use to shape a show. You’ll experiment with ways to build formats. Led by Jenna Goldade from Bull Skit Comedy in Red Deer, Alberta, this session will give you practical tools for designing formats you can take back to your ensemble and develop into full performances.

Ready to expand your character range and get in some reps? This workshop is all about creating and playing characters with more depth. You’ll strengthen your character creation skills, explore new tools and techniques, and add fresh approaches to your performance toolbox. Through physical anchoring, point-of-view work, and dynamic ensemble collaboration, you’ll learn how to make characters that feel grounded, distinct, and alive. Guided by Stephen Sim, you’ll dive into a mix of classic character games and original exercises refined through years of international improv workshops.

Relationships are at the core of good storytelling. This workshop is focused on building better relationships so that your stories start off strong. You’ll work on defining relationships, creating a shared history, and using emotional familiarity to immediately set the context of the scene. Led by Caity Curtis from the Improv Company, this session will give you the tools to make relationships on stage feel specific, grounded, and believable.
